Where do we go from here? by ~alexishelmsley:iconalexishelmsley:

So, where does this leave us”, Jenny thought, looking at the computer screen, her mind recalling, in actuate detail how they felt together that night, they were not intimate, but all she recalled was how his hand felt in hers, the way they intertwined… it was almost magical. However, she was weighing up the severity of his revelation, contemplating if he was telling the truth, whether he was being serious, or just like the other guys that were cruel to her in the past and used her to relieve their frustrations.

She dared not ask him that question. She feared the answer, the complications that would follow, and the potential doubts that she would have “why in the hell is HE with someone like me?”

Then, the computer distracted her from her thoughts, she looked at the screen, his message read “But I’m still curious” She was too, and she couldn’t help but admit to him that she was. The admission was like trying to stop a volcano from erupting. The most brilliant contradiction in the world, that could see her gain everything, and yet lose something so precious. Either way, it would be a lose-lose situation. Their curiosity could become a problem, regardless, they’d agreed not to submit to their wishes, but something was still there, niggling at her. Whether it niggled at him to the same extent, was a different story. Reading him was like trying to understand Danish when the only language you knew was English.

Jenny considered every other person that she has had within her life. All of them hurt her in some way, shape or form. She still wore the scars from her last ‘obsession’; to call it a relationship would be out of the question. All he wanted was sex, and that was something Jenny would never hand out on a plate. She would do all the running around, and continue to get hurt. But not this time.

If he were serious, then he would do the running around. Thinking about it, there was always something between them… It would be amazing; He looked like James Hetfield, one of the many celebrities that she adored, but was called Shane which reminded her of Shane McMahon…  and to be able to call him hers, made her feel that little less ugly, like she was normal.

Jenny never really thought that she was anything special to look at. She knew that she was never going to be a size 8, no matter what she tried. So for Shane to say that he liked her was, well, amazing. She always said that if someone liked her, they’d have to be “gay or bi” and thinking of Shane, she could have a point. To say that he was a “metro sexual” was an understatement.

“How would I be able to cope with someone that spent more time in the bathroom than me?”  She thought, “Mind you, I don’t spend that long on in there! 10 mins max, and I’m good to go! So as long as he didn’t hog the bathroom for that 10 minute space when I need it, I suppose that it would be possible”

Suddenly, she felt her heart submit to a feeling that she thought that she had buried a few years before. Jenny had vowed not to get involved and feel that burning sensation again, but she had. She knew damn well what it was, her desires, curiosity and most importantly, her excitement. So, how could she go about giving into that curiosity? Simple, she sighed, looking at the computer screen, plotting every word with bated breath. Jenny reluctantly typed, “So, shall we meet up to talk about things?”

It seemed like an eternity before the computer yelled at her. That orange bar flashing at her, a colour which could determine her fate. Reluctantly, she clicked upon the bar, anxiously waiting for the answer. “Yes, is tomorrow good for you?” Jenny’s heart skipped several beats. She tried not to act too excited, and made him wait patiently, she read once that the best thing that a woman could do is not to be too hasty in their replies, just to keep the males guessing. “Yeah, tomorrows brilliant. Where? When? What time?” She finally responded.

“Bus stop in town. 10.30am - don’t miss it, I know what you’re like for lie-ins! It’s my only day off of work tomorrow, and I think that it could take some time to sort everything out.”

“You cheeky mare! Ok, well, I’ll speak to you tomorrow at 10.30 then. You never know eh, might get things sorted quicker than you think. Well, I’ll talk to you tomorrow. G’night.”

After all of this was sorted, Jenny had to leave, she couldn’t put things into words for Shane to understand, but then again, would he be interested? Nevertheless, she just had to go and contemplate everything that had been said that night. She looked over the conversation again and again, with an ironic disbelief. Normally it was the guys who were in the dilemma she was… “I can’t believe that SHE likes me. What in the hell does that say about me?”Well, Jenny always assumed that those who rejected her thought like this, and so, followed her own train of thought. She looked at her clock – 11.15pm, just under 12 hours until she would see him.

Suddenly, Jenny felt an angry, tense feeling within her stomach. She knew that she was letting her thoughts and emotions run into overtime. She knew that imagining him being her partner was way too far down the line. All of her doubts came back to her, not that they had left her, but she’d pushed them to one side. But now, they were racing through her mind at a million miles a second. “Great.” She thought. “Not now, I need sleep. Please switch off.” Jenny pleaded with herself as she lay in her bed, staring into nothing. Her request was granted.

Jenny woke to find she was in Shane’s arms. She looked around; the place was familiar, nostalgic, full of memories. But the sound of Shane’s’ voice distracted her from trying to remember where she was.

“You know, I think you look amazing when you sleep! You look so peaceful, almost angelic…” Shane said, smirking. “I would give up every single lie-in on this earth just to see you sleep.”

Jenny looked up puzzled, she couldn’t respond to the unusual sentiments that she had just heard. She just lay there, in awe of what was happening.

“You’ve always not been a morning person, sweetheart.” Shane chuckled as he kissed her cheek. There was something about his mannerisms that indicated to Jenny that things were not as they seemed. Shane seemed, closer to her, literally, but also emotionally. Jenny tried to get up out of bed.

“Do you think that now I have you, I’m letting you out of my sight?”
Shane questioned with a hint of mischief in his voice, leaning in for a kiss, which was received with caution.

“Whoa! Did something happen to you in your sleep? It’s not like you to be so cautions.”

“Erm, sorry, just give me a minute to wake up here. You said before I wasn’t a morning person. But… erm… good morning… sweetheart.”
Jenny managed to splutter out.

With that response, Shane smiled, kissed Jenny again, and lay on his pillow again, releasing his grip on her. Despite Jenny’s earlier caution, she felt rather exposed without Shane’s arms around her. She turned to face him. As she did, she noticed a gold band on his wedding finger. In a panic, she looked at her left hand, and there they were. Two gold bands, one with the biggest, shiniest diamond she’d ever seen. Just then a chuckle rumbled from Shane’s body. “Sweetheart, you do that every morning. That diamond is not going anywhere!” Jenny nervously smirked, then carried on with what she was doing.

“Oh, shit. THIS  is my Husband. But how the fuck did that happen? I didn’t want to get marred, NOW look at me!” Jenny thought, frantically searching her brain for the answers. “What date is it?”
Enquired Jenny, hastily.

“February 29th 2008, why. It’s not like you to lose the day!”

“Oh, you know what, its still early, I’m still tired… just give me a few more minutes.” Jenny said, trying to go back to sleep.

“Awww”, Shane whimpered, “But… I’ve made plans for you!” Shane said, deviously. He had always been cute when he protested, but the second aspect of his statement, made him sound like the teenager Jenny had met in school.

“Oh, what plans would that be?” Jenny said curiously, yet she had a feeling what his plans would be. She’d always been able to match Shane for every innuendo, smutty comment or sexual reference he said, that’s one of the reasons why they always had a laugh at school, but just don’t mention football. That was the one topic that would divide them.

Jenny didn’t even finish her sentence before she was pinned down. Shane was on top of her. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to get away, but she didn’t want to. THIS was what she wanted. She gazed deeply into his brown eyes, and said “well?

“That would be telling sweetheart.” Shane winked, before kissing her passionately. Jenny giggled, “This is how it all started isn’t it? We could be talking to each other over the internet right now, all those years ago.”

“Yeah it is. Look at us now. I’d never thought that I’d call you my wife. I’m so glad we gave into curiosity…”

Suddenly, a searing sound of an alarm clock pierced through Shane’s voice, Jenny jumped up, startled. Looked around, Shane was not there, neither was her wedding ring or her diamond. She looked at the clock – 09.00am. The whole thing was a dream, and yet it felt so real. There was a part of Jenny that wanted to go back to that moment. To find out what his plan was. But in over an hour, Jenny would see him, but then panic set in, as she got ready, she thought “Did the dream mean a thing? What would Shane say? How would he be with me? Would he be as cold to me tomorrow, as Shane was last time?” Jenny knew that she was taking a risk. But would it really be worth it?

There wasn’t enough time to consider all these questions. Jenny had walked to the bus stop, their rendezvous, in autopilot. Then, she caught sight of him, walking up to her. He beamed that smile that could light up a room and then some, hugged her and whispered, “I’ve been thinking about you a lot. I’m so glad that you’ve agreed to this. Thank you.” Jenny stood there shocked, but still cautious. She had several things that she wanted to ask him, and the most important one couldn’t be asked there.

She looked at him and said: “well, you pick our destination then.” Assuming that they were travelling by bus. It seemed logical to her, meeting at a bus stop, getting on a bus, then going somewhere quiet to talk.

Shane smiled, deviously. “No need, got the car around the back. I’ve made special arrangements for us. Somewhere were we wont be interrupted.” That mischievous grin appeared on Jenny’s face, her eyebrow raised too. She tried to bite her tongue and not say it. But her natural rebellion forced it out of her.

“Won’t be interrupted eh? Well, this could get interesting. And to think, I’ve not brought a change of clothing with me.” She smirked as she got into the car.

She knew that she could see Shane’s mind working overtime, with the possibilities, the innuendos and the ambiguity within her statement. “Did he do it deliberately? Did he do it to test the waters?” Jenny thought. But that was one thing she could keep quiet about.

After beginning the drive, the awkward silence set in. Jenny didn’t know what it was down to, maybe Shane was too engrossed in driving, maybe he was simply gathering his thoughts or maybe the reality of this situation was beginning to set in and he was regretting the whole thing. Jenny didn’t know what to do, say or what to think. She thought that if the tension between them was this bad, when they hadn’t even discussed the thing, then what would it be like if they were to decide what in the hell they were going to do about the whole situation? That thought was unbearable. She needed a distraction.

“Can you guess where we’re going?” Shane asked. Jenny, had an idea where they were going, but thought that it was best not to tell, just in case she was wrong.

“Erm… no Idea. Besides, you’re the one that’s driving, so I’ll just sit back and enjoy the ride.” Replied Jenny, with a smirk on her face, which she tried to hide from Shane. She looked at his response, and realised that her motives behind the statement were achieved. She knew what Shane was thinking about and that he was plotting a response, and to know that she induced those thoughts made her feel in control.

“Ah! Then this shall be our mystery tour!” Shane enthused, but Jenny could tell that he was still creating a response to her innuendo. She knew that it would be here, eventually, so she waited, trying not to let her anticipation fill the air. “Oh, and this wasn’t the ride I was hoping you would enjoy!” Shane uttered. He had that smug look upon his face that he used to wear when he made an innuendo back when they were in school.

Jenny looked at Shane, wearing a shocked expression, thinking, “Is THAT the best you can do?” Nevertheless, she giggled, somewhat nervously, trying to hide her shock at his response and plotted her next point of conversation. They shared interests that was undeniable, but sitting in the car with the enormous tension between them, made Jenny question why they were intrigued with each other.

Finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, the car came to a stop. The sudden termination of the journey stunned Jenny. At first, she wasn’t too sure what in the hell was going on or where she was. Jenny took a few minutes to figure out where she was. Shane just sat, watching her. “Are you ok? You look confused, don’t tell me you don’t know this place.”

The enquiry shook Jenny from her thoughts. She rapidly scanned her brain to give Shane a response. “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just shocked that you brought me here. I mean, how… can you… afford this place.” Jenny knew where she was – the car park of the fanciest hotel in the area. Jenny couldn’t understand Shane’s motives behind this stunt. Was this a way to impress her? Or was this simply a way of manipulating and taunting her? Jenny knew that his motives would soon be revealed.

“I thought that I’d treat you. But if you’re going to be like that…”

“Don’t be silly! But you know that I would have been happy with a McDonalds or some other crap like that!”

“I know that you would have, but this is me we’re dealing with. I don’t do things by half. Besides, we don’t know anyone here, which means no interruptions again!”
Shane said with a mischievous tone.

They walked into the hotel, Jenny thought that it would be too far to hold his hand, although she would like it. But she was stubborn, if he wanted her, he’s doing the work she thought. Then she was astounded by her surroundings and felt rather out of place. Shane walked up to her, and said,
“Follow me”

“To where?, Shane, what in the hell have you done?”

“I got us a room. You didn’t think that I’d take you here for just the meal now?”

“Erm… yes! But which way is it?”

“Follow me. You know that curiosity killed the cat”

Jenny followed Shane as he walked off. She didn’t complete the rhyme that Shane had said, she knew it would raise questions. As they both stood in the lift, the tension that was present in the car returned. Jenny turned to Shane and uttered “This is amazing, I really don’t deserve all of this. Thank you.” Without thinking, she kissed him on the cheek. Realising what she did, she turned and faced the doors, wishing for them to open, so she could run off. Jenny felt like she had betrayed herself in some way. But she knew that what was done was done, and she had to live with it.

After what seemed like an eternity, they got to their room. Feeling somewhat relieved as Shane opened the door, Jenny entered the room, wanting to sit down and contemplate over things. However, she knew that it was impossible, especially seeing as she was in awe of her surroundings. The room was perfect for a princess, complete with an en suite bathroom, a king-size bed; the room had everything that she desired. Shane had pushed the boat out, and Jenny knew it.

As Jenny was looking around the room, she noticed a bouquet of flowers on the windowsill with her name on it. She took the card, unaware that she was being watched by Shane, opened it and read the card. “Here’s to giving into curiosity. S xXx” The card read. Jenny turned around, shocked, looking at Shane. For once in her life, she was truly speechless. Shane didn’t expect Jenny to react in the way that she did. But, he knew that it had worked. It was written all over his face.

“You didn’t bring a change of clothes did you? I thought that you wouldn’t contemplate that Jenny”

Jenny looked at him, puzzled. She told him earlier that she hadn’t brought a change of clothing with her. “No, I thought that it was obvious, Shane. Why, what do you have planned?” Jenny asked curiously.

“Well, I thought dinner, later. And, seeing as you have nothing to wear…” Shane walked over to the wardrobe and opened it. “…I thought that this would be nice.” He pulled out a sequinned evening gown, in her favourite colour blue. Jenny noticed that inside the wardrobe was a matching tuxedo.

“Wow, well, what can I say? Other than thank you.” Jenny knew that it took a lot for Shane to wear blue, he hated the colour due to his football team, but obviously he could make an exception for her.

“Well, you better get ready” Shane said, “Dinner is served at 8, and well, its 5 now, and I would like to get there on time” Despite the sarcasm in his voice, Jenny knew that he had a point, and with that, she locked herself in the bathroom and began to get ready. She would make sure that she looked her best, not just for her but also to prove that she can be pretty, at least for one night.

Finally, they were both ready to go for dinner. Jenny felt a strange sensation, she knew that officially speaking, her and Shane were just friends, but the way that he had treated her, made her question exactly what he wanted from her. Yes, everything that he had done was so flattering and made her feel special. But was this part of his plan? To make her feel special, use her for what he wants and then throw her away. It was these doubts that made her question her judgement and actions, she knew that she would have to keep her guard up.

Jenny sat at the table. She was still absorbing the surroundings. Jenny knew that this could develop into something special. Jenny realised that she had to ask the question that had been plaguing her mind since the previous night. Clearing her throat she uttered, “Shane, I hate to ruin a good day. But I have to ask this question. But I am afraid of the reaction that this will get. Maybe I’m reading too much into things, you know what I’m like for making mountains out of molehills, but I just have to know. Where do we go from here?”

This is a story based upon what ifs? and people taking chances.

Despite being loosly based upon a situation that I was in a few years ago, it is majoircally speaking fiction, hence it being placed in the lovely fiction section.

I would like to thank Adie for making sure that this story made sence to everyone else and not just me! ;P

Advanced critique welcomed for this, as it -should- help me to improve!

You sure write stories better than taking pictures. No offence ment!

I loved the story, and as I got to know you until now, I see that the main character has a lot from your personality.

Though it was a little bit wierd to read about character who had my name...

The strongest impression I got, is that this story reflects your thoughts and fears.
I think that at some points, all of us (women) have some of these thoughts.

Though it is simple languege, it is well written and easy to understand. I liked the way you described the situations, and as knowing that you are not a professional for writting, this passage could easily be part of romance book.

Maybe the whole thing is not my style, I generally read and love fantasy, but since I got to know you and I consider you as someone who can tell a lot of interesting stuff, I was not dissapointed here, and the ending of the story, intrigued me a little bit, whishing to know the continueation if there is such to fallow.

Good work over here.

:aww:  thank you!

No offence was taken at the picture comment. I love to write, but I have to be properly inspired to write a story as meaningful and fluent as this!

To be honest, because the story is loosley based arround events that happened to me, I originally wanted the female Protagonist (main character) to be called Alexis. I then thought that it would be way too obvious, and called her Jenny after a very good friend of mine. But I do understand that its weird to read a story about someone who has the same name as you! (sorry about that!)

As for the follow on to this story, Im not too sure about it. There is a part of me that likes the current ending, because it leaves it open for the reader to create the follow on themselves - the reader gets to decide wheather Jenny and Shane get the 'Hollywood' ending.

However, there is a part of me that really wants to continue with the story as I feel that it does have potential. Although, Im concerned that if I were to continue with the story, it could leave the reader with a sence of disapointment, as the story may not develop as they would have wanted.

Welcome. :)

I am writting too sometimes, but it happens really rarely. I have many beginings to stories and no continueations, maybe one day...

Don't worry, thats ok, it was just a little bit wierd. ;)

Yes, I agree with you.
As for now,I would lieve it as it is, and if you feel inspired you can try and write the continueation, and if you will like it you can post. Anyways it is for you to deside. :)

Excellent story Alexis..! You have a real "knack" for this sort of thing.. You should most certainly continue on Deviant, then on to a publisher!. I am serious... This is really good!..

Congrats on such a great story!
